28 August 2006 - Rishi Panchami

Om

"Our society has been described as our living form of God. Let us also adopt that form as our Chosen Deity and resolve to serve it all through our life as a token of our indebtedness."
- Shri M. S. Golwalkar Guruji

Golwalkar Guruji

Namaste,

The month of Shravan is the fifth month of the Hindu calender and is the most auspicious month of the Chaturmas. On Purnima or fullmoon day, or during the course of the month the star Shravan rules the sky, hence the month is called Shravan. This month is spread out with innumerably religious festivals and ceremonies and almost all the days of this month are auspicious. On this day of the Shravan full moon, stars are worshipped. In Vedic times it was believed that the spirits of certain departed great sages of the earth inhabited certain stars, the most famous being the constellation Ursa Major i.e. the seven brightest stars of the north (The Great Bear). Later, the seers became identified with the stars they inhabited. The seven worshipped on Rishi Panchami are - Kasyapa, Atri, Bharadvaja, Visvamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vashishta.

Shri Golwalkar Guruji was a modern day rishi. His spiritual standing was such that he could have easily become a Shankaracharya or the President of the Ramakrishna Mission. In fact, he was ordained into sanyasa by Swami Akhandananda, a Guru bandhu of Swami Vivekananda. He was offered the post of Shankaracharya of Goverdhan Peeth. However, Shri Guruji politely refused these offers saying that he had already resolved to devote his entire life in the service of the nation through the medium of the RSS. To Shri Guruji, attainment of personal moksha was secondary to the welfare of his fellow beings. For him service to his fellow beings was the greatest sadhana.
