It was on June 5, 1973 that Shri Golwalkar Guruji left his mortal coil. He had been diagnosed with malignancy in 1970. When doctors revealed this terrible diagnosis to him, he calmly accepted it. "How much time do I have?" was his query. When he was told he could survive for a few years with treatment, his reply was, " In that case, I will have to redouble my efforts to carry out my life mission ". Such was his complete devotion to his chosen vocation. Doctors attending on him were surprised to see him up and about on the third day after surgery, meeting other patients and giving them courage. For the next couple of years, there was no let up in his tours, meetings and speeches. He continued to write letters and meet people as usual. Above all, he never failed to attend the daily Sangh shakha and say the Sangh prayer. Even on the last day of his life, while barely able to stand and speak, he said his prayer and took his last breath. In his last three letters addressed to RSS workers, he asked them for their forgiveness in case he had inadvertently hurt them on any occasion. He reminded them that their work was ideal-centric, not personality-centric. He firmly told them not to erect any memorials in his memory. Erecting his statues, raising funds in his name, celebrating his birthdays and showering praises on him were things he strongly disapproved. To rededicate ourselves to the ideals he set before us can be the only way to pay homage to this true karmayogin!
